Twenty-nine political parties and civic organizations called for the immediate cessation of the ongoing demolitions targeting historic buildings in the city of Benghazi, without prior notice or clarification if there is a reconstruction program in place.

This came in a statement issued on Wednesday morning, calling on the authorities responsible for reconstruction projects in the city to abide by their responsibility for preserving and protecting historic landmarks.

The statement also pointed to the need to seek the help of experts in the field of antiquities and heritage, then coordinate through a joint, neutral committee to protect the architectural heritage of the city.
