The French President's Special Envoy to Libya, Paul Soler, affirmed his country's support for the 2023 elections initiative announced by the Special Representative of the United Nations Secretary-General for Libya, Abdoulaye Bathily, on Tuesday.

This came during his meeting with Marshal Khalifa Haftar in Benghazi, accompanied by French Ambassador Mostafa Mihraje, according to a tweet by the French Embassy on Wednesday.

The embassy wrote: "Positive exchange by the Special Envoy and French Ambassador with Marshal Haftar: France's full support for the initiative by SRSG Bathily and the holding of presidential and parliamentary elections in 2023."

Soler, who spent last week in Tripoli, has also recently held meetings with Presidential Council leader Mohamed Menfi, Government of National Unity Prime Minister Abdulamid Dabaiba, High Council of State leader Khaled Al-Mishri, and Minister of Foreign Affairs Najla Mangoush.

During those meetings, he expressed the same support for Bathily's initiative and stressed the necessity of holding elections in 2023.
