The Chairman of the Board of Directors of Libya's National Oil Corporation (NOC), Farhat Bengdara, announced the start of a strategic plan for the oil and gas sector, aimed at increasing production to two million barrels per day.

This came during a meeting in the city of Benghazi on Wednesday, that included the Board of Directors and management of the NOC.

Bengdara referred to the NOC’s contract with the American consulting company Kearney, which will assist in undertaking the implementation of the plan, along with many initiatives to develop the oil and gas sector in Libya.

He concluded: "We have an ambitious vision to return Libya to the ranks of the main energy-producing countries in the world. To achieve this, it requires a major change in the oil and gas sector and developing appropriate strategies that take into account the local and international changes and challenges in the field."

The NOC has a timeframe of three to five years to achieve this target.

Libya's crude oil production reached 1.215 million bpd in January.
