Libya's 5+5 Joint Military Commission has agreed on a coordination mechanism for the withdrawal of mercenaries and foreign forces in liaison with neighboring Sudan and Niger, the United Nations said on Wednesday.

The procedural step would allow for joint coordination and data exchange to facilitate the full withdrawal of mercenaries and foreign fighters from Libya, the UN Libya envoy Abdoulaye Bathily announced after a meeting in Egypt.

In his closing remarks at the meeting, Bathily expressed his appreciation for the Egyptian government's efforts to support dialogue between Libyan parties, praising the military commission and the participating liaison committees.

Concluding: “What you have achieved here is an important step towards achieving sustainable stability and peace in Libya, in neighboring countries and the region in general. This progress is also an important step towards creating an appropriate climate for the political process, including organizing elections in 2023.”
