China's representative to the UN said that the ceasefire in Libya was reached "with the support of international partners", warning that "the Libyan parties must reach an agreement on the future of their country and promote consensus in the interests of the country and the Libyan people".

Speaking to the Security Council on Thursday, the Chinese delegate stressed that the future of Libya is currently "in the hands of the Libyan people", pointing to the progress made in the current transition, which resulted in the formation of the national unity government, which is preparing to hold elections and organize a conference for reconciliation and unification of institutions.

Beijing "hopes to strengthen dialogue between the Libyan parties to reach the necessary constitutional basis for the timely holding of the elections, support the UN mission, the ongoing arrangements for the holding of the elections and assist the Libyan government in this regard," he added.

Also calling on all Libyan parties to "make every effort to open up the coastal road to Sirte" because that is "essential to the work of the ceasefire monitoring mechanism" which Beijing hopes to deploy "soon and must carry out its mission impartially".

The Chinese representative also stressed that the withdrawal of foreign fighters and mercenaries "has implications for Libya and the region", calling on all parties concerned to implement the Security Council resolution in this regard and reform the security sector in order to solve the problem of the proliferation of armed groups and the infiltration of their elements into neighboring countries in order to contain the threats to regional security.
