A UN official revealed that the number of ISIS fighters in Libya is "estimated at a few hundreds," indicating that the organization "has strengthened its position in the Middle East."

"The number of ISIS fighters in Libya is estimated at a few hundreds, but the organization still maintains the ability to threaten the entire region," Vladimir Voronkov, Assistant Secretary-General of the United Nations for Counter-Terrorism Affairs, told the UN Security Council. .

In West Africa, the UN official estimated that the number of fighters loyal to ISIS is "about 3500," indicating that the organization continues "to build strong relations with local Islamist extremist groups."

Voronkov pointed out that "more than 10,000 ISIS fighters are still operating under the banner of the organization, moving between Iraq and Syria in small cells."

The UN official noted that “the risk of ISIS carrying out attacks outside the conflict areas has diminished since the beginning of the year, most likely due to restrictions imposed on movement in these countries and the Covid-19 pandemic.”

Voronkov noted that "in the conflict zones, the threat has increased, as evidenced by the regrouping of ISIS's strength and the increase in its activities in Iraq and Syria."

The UN official warned that "there is no clear indication of a change in the strategic direction of ISIS under its new leader."
