US Ambassador Norland visits Ankara to discuss "demilitarized solution for central Libya"

The US Embassy in Libya announced that Ambassador Richard Norland is conducting consultations in Ankara with senior Turkish officials today, on “the urgent need to support Libyan voices genuinely seeking an end to the conflict and return to UN-facilitated political dialogue, with full respect for Libya’s sovereignty and territorial integrity."

The US embassy said in a statement that the visit, which followed phone calls between President Donald Trump and his Turkish counterpart Recep Tayyip Erdogan, dealt with “steps to achieve a demilitarized solution for central Libya, realize a full and reciprocal withdrawal of foreign forces and mercenaries, enable the National Oil Corporation to resume its critical work, and promote economic transparency and reforms."

On Monday, the US embassy announced that Ambassador Norland traveled to Cairo after the recent discussions on Libya between President Donald Trump and his Egyptian counterpart Abdel Fattah al-Sisi, as well as between US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and his Egyptian counterpart Sameh Shoukry, to consult with senior Egyptian officials about “steps to achieve a permanent ceasefire."

In a statement, the embassy said that Norland “welcomed the momentum generated by the June 6 Cairo Declaration and underscored U.S. support for all responsible Libyan leaders seeking a peaceful resolution to the conflict that restores Libya’s sovereignty, promotes economic reforms, and prevents further foreign escalation."

Norland also met with with House of Representatives Speaker Aguila Saleh, to learn about the House of Representatives’s efforts to promote a “demilitarized solution for Sirte and al-Jufra, enable the National Oil Corporation to resume its vital work while ensuring that oil and gas revenues are managed transparently, and improve governance leading to credible and peaceful elections."  Ambassador Norland expressed support for the Speaker’s aspirations and those of all responsible Libyan elements, for a Libyan solution to end the conflict and ensure a stable and prosperous future for the Libyan people.
