Foreign Minister of the Government of National Accord, Mohamed Taher Sayala, held a meeting Wednesday in Tokyo with Japanese Defense Minister Takeshi Iwaya to discuss ways to strengthen relations between the two countries.

The Foreign Ministry said in a statement published on its Facebook page that "the meeting discussed ways to develop cooperation and benefit from the experience of the Japanese side, especially in the field of training and capacity building, where the Foreign Minister requested the assistance of the Japanese side in training the Coast Guard and Border Guards."

Sayala also asked "the possibility of providing the Libyan state with border control devices to combat illegal immigration and the return of the Japanese embassy to Tripoli," according to the statement.

"The Japanese minister expressed his admiration for Libya's success in the process of eliminating weapons of mass destruction, and wished that some countries in the region would follow suit," the statement said.

The statement pointed out that the Japanese minister was former deputy foreign minister and had visited Libya in that capacity in 2007.
