Libya’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Taher El-Sonni, said that “there are certain international forces who fear the idea of elections in Libya because their results are not guaranteed, which may not serve their narrow interests.”

He pointed out that the international community's attention is focused on three files, "the first of which is the continuation of the flow of oil, preventing migration to Europe and combating terrorism."

El-Sonni said in a speech before the UN Security Council on Monday evening, that the rest of what is happening in Libya is “unimportant” and far from international focus on. He added that resolving the Libyan crisis requires restoring ownership and leadership to the political process for Libyans and enabling the people to renew the legitimacy of national institutions through elections.

El-Sonni reiterated the need for international and regional powers to lift their hand from Libya and not to interfere in the country's internal affairs in order to achieve a minimum level of national consensus, expressing his confidence in Libya and the Libyans to return and recover from the crisis that the country has been experiencing since 2011.
