Misrata security thwarts attempt to smuggle more than 600 migrants to Italy

The Director of Misurata Security, Brigadier General Ali Al-Darrat, announced that an attempt to smuggle more than 600 illegal immigrants to Italy was thwarted on Saturday evening.

He explained in statements to 'Radio Misrata FM' that at exactly ten o'clock on Saturday evening, the migrants were rescued from sea in Zureik area, noting that most of them were from Bangladesh, in addition to a number of Syrians and other nationalities. "We will continue efforts to prevent human smuggling in cooperation with other security agencies," he added.

The migrants were taken to the Tariq al-Matar reception center in Tripoli, where they will receive humanitarian assistance before being deported to their home countries.s.

A total of 4,013 illegal migrants were rescued and returned to Libya this year, including 381 women and 169 minors, according to the International Organization for Migration (IOM).

In 2021, a total of 32,425 illegal migrants were rescued and returned to Libya, while 662 lost their lives and 891 others went missing off the Libyan coast on the Central Mediterranean route, IOM revealed.
