On Thursday evening, the General Command of the Libyan Arab Armed Forces announced the launch of an operation "to track terrorists and expel African mercenary gangs that threaten security and stability and engage in looting, theft, sabotage and smuggling of all kinds".

"This operation comes within the framework of implementing the tasks and duties assigned to the general command of the Libyan armed forces in maintaining national security, citizen safety, eradicating terrorism and cutting off all those who intend to harm the security of Libya and the dignity of Libyans," said General Command spokesman Major General Ahmed Al-Mismari in a statement.

Al-Mismari said the operation was in response to the "escalation of terrorist operations in the southwest and the recent car bomb targeting a military site".
