Italian Foreign Minister Luigi Di Maio welcomed the announcement on Monday by UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres of the appointment of Slovak diplomat Jan Kubis as his special envoy to Libya and head of the UN mission.

The Italian Foreign Ministry confirmed its support for Kubis' appointment, expressing a "full commitment " to the work of the United Nations and its mission, and the stabilization processes in Libya, according to a statement on Tuesday.

Di Maio highly appreciated the commitment made by the Acting UN envoy, Stephanie Williams, "as her professionalism and determination allowed important progress to be made on all tracks of the internal Libyan dialogue".

Kubis has served as the United Nations Special Coordinator in Lebanon since 2019, as special representative of the secretary-general and head of the United Nations Assistance Mission in Iraq between 2015 and 2018, as head of the UN mission in Afghanistan between 2011 and 2015, as executive secretary of the United Nations economic and Social Commission for Europe (2009-2011), and as minister for foreign affairs of Slovakia between 2006 and 2009.
