Italian Foreign Minister Luigi Di Maio revealed that army commander-in-chief Marshal Khalifa Haftar has asked for the release of four Libyans convicted of human trafficking in Italy, in exchange for the release of Sicilian fishermen who were being held in Benghazi.

"At first Haftar asked for this, and this was not acceptable, and then we came to a more moderate position by asking him to resume relations," Di Maio said, according to a statement to Italian television on Sunday evening, quoted by the Italian news agency Aki.

The Italian minister stressed the principle of separating judicial authorities from executive ones, adding: "This is not possible according to the Italian constitution."

Last Thursday, Italy announced the release of the fishermen, after a brief visit by Italian prime minister Giuseppe Conte and Di Maio to Benghazi, where they met with Marshal Khalifa Haftar.
