Italian President Sergio Mattarella welcomed the release of Sicilian sailors who had been detained since last September in the city of Benghazi, following the visit of Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte and his foreign minister Luigi Di Maio.

"The presidency of the Italian republic has announced that President Sergio Mattarella has received with great satisfaction from the prime minister, Giuseppe Conte, the news of the release of our fishermen detained in Libya," the Italian news agency AKI reported.

The Presidency noted that the head of state expressed "his appreciation to the Ministry of foreign affairs, Italian intelligence and security services for their efforts to achieve this positive result."

Authorities in the city of Benghazi have been holding 18 sailors from the fishing fleet of the Sicilian town of Mazara del Vallo with their boats for more than 100 days on charges of fishing in Libyan territorial waters.
