The Malta Customs have intercepted and seized 23 speed boats destined for Libya on suspicion of people smuggling, Prime Minister Robert Abela said on Tuesday.

"Silently but diligently, at times alone, we are fighting the root causes of irregular migration," he said in a tweet announcing the seizure.

The boats were packed into 23 different containers and arrived at Malta Freeport on a container ship.

Following discussions with the Sanctions Monitoring Board, the Customs Department decided to confiscate the boats as they would be used by human traffickers to smuggle people to Europe.
