Italian FM Di Maio promises families of fishing boat crews detained in Libya

The Italian Foreign Minister, Luigi Di Maio, affirmed “the government's utmost commitment to a positive solution” to the issue of the two fishing boat crews that were arrested in Libya, during contacts between the Minister and their families according to the AKI news agency.

Sources told the Italian agency on Tuesday, that Di Maio "informed the family members of the crews of the two fishing boats that were stopped off the Libyan coast that a government summit will be held on the matter," because "the action to be taken must be unanimous."

The sources pointed out that the minister was keen to "clarify the complexity of the situation and the timing in which it occurred" during these contacts, in addition to "affirming the Ministry of Foreign Affairs' readiness and support for family members."

On September 3, the Italian mayor of Matzara del Vallo, Salvatore Quinci, announced the seizue of the fishing boats "Artemide" and "Medina" at the port of Benghazi, revealing that the Libyan authorities had detained crew members.
