Libya's General Electricity Company announced a total blackout of the western region's electrical network as a result militants storming into a number of switching stations and forcing operators to switch on electricity loads, causing the system to completely collapse.

According to the company in a statement today, work is underway at a very rapid pace to rebuild the electrical network.

The General Electricity Company has been using rolling blackouts in the western region to lessen electrical loads due to insufficient generation capacity and inadequate transmission infrastructure to deliver power.

It urged on citizens on Tuesday not to return the electrical loads by force because it leads to the collapse of the network and total blackouts.
