A spokesman for the Egyptian presidency said that any direct intervention from Egypt in Libya “has become internationally legitimate, whether within the framework of the United Nations Charter (the right to self-defense), or based on the sole legitimate authority elected by the Libyan people (Parliament).”

This came after Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi announced on Saturday, that his country considers the city of Sirte a red line, which cannot be crossed by the forces of the Government of National Accord, stressing that his country will not allow the conflict in Libya to move past this line given its importance to "Egypt's security" .

He added that "Egypt is ready to provide support and assistance to the Libyan people."
