Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan confirmed in Thursday, that Ankara's support "for the Libyan people and the legitimate government will continue," in reference to the Government of National Accord headed by Fayez Al-Sarraj, who signed two memoranda of understanding on maritime borders and military cooperation with Turkey on November 27.
Erdogan's statement came during a joint press conference with Al-Sarraj after their meeting.
"We stressed the need for there to be a new political stage in Libya under the auspices of the United Nations," Erdogan said of his meeting with Al-Sarraj, appealing to "the international community to support the legitimate government in Libya."
The Turkish President affirmed during his speech that Ankara supports international initiatives to achieve peace in Libya, pledging to continue supporting the GNA by saying that "our support to the Libyan people and the legitimate government will continue."
Regarding the implementation of the maritime borders agreement and Turkey beginning exploration off the coast of Libya, Edogan said, "We decided to conduct an oil exploration operation in these marine areas."
