NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg held a phone call to Libyan Presidential Council leader Fayez Al-Sarraj on Saturday, at the latter's request to discuss developments in Libya.

The Secretary-General expressed his deep concern over the recent escalation of violence in Libya and stressed the lack of a military solution to the situation in the country according to a statement released by the Presidential Council.

Stoltenberg stressed that NATO fully supports the work of the United Nations to find a political solution to the crisis and urged all parties in Libya and members of the international community to support the UN-led operation.

The Secretary-General said that NATO is still ready to assist Libya in building its defense and security institutions, as announced by heads of state and governmental members of NATO in 2018.
