The Special Representative of the United Nations Secretary-General to Libya, Stephanie Williams, condemned today, "the repeated shelling of Ain Zara today, including Al-Ruwaimi prison," which resulted in "a number of injuries among inmates, prison and police officers."

In a statement, Williams accused "Libyan National Army forces" of carrying out this bombing, and called for the immediate cessation of operations in order to avoid more damage.

She said: “Although many UN member states, the United Nations Support Mission in Libya and the Secretary-General of the United Nations appealed for an immediate cessation of hostilities to make room for joint efforts to address the Covid-19 epidemic, armed confrontations, bombing operations and the mobilization of forces in Libya It continues to unacceptably ignore the safety and welfare of civilians.”

"The mission has documented, in the past 48 hours, that there have been more than 13 violations of the humanitarian truce, killing at least three civilians and wounding others," Williams added, urging authorities throughout Libya to release all prisoners held "arbitrarily" and to look at the release of prisoners in pretrial detention, especially women, children, persons with disabilities, migrants and refugees, in the context of responding to the outbreak of the novel coronavirus.
