Italy: immigration flows from Libya down 97%

Italian Interior Minister Luciana Lamorgese says illegal immigration flows from Libya have fallen by 97%.

In a briefing to the House of Representatives on a memorandum of understanding signed with Libya's Government National Accord (GNA) on immigrants, Lamorgese said that "the initiatives stipulated in the memorandum have gradually evolved in parallel with data on the decline of migration flows Libyan coasts."

"Compared to the latest data for 2017, there was a 97.2% drop in 2019," she said, commenting: "If we compare these data with those of migrant flows from other countries, the drop in numbers from Libya is the most obvious.''

At the same meeting,Lamorgese revealed her intention to ask the GNA to amend the immigration agreement to include new items, including the gradual closure of migrant shelters: "critical to the human rights situation and the replacement of other centers run by UN agencies."
