Italy to strengthen cooperation with Morocco on Libyan file

Morocco and Italy signed a declaration of a strategic partnership based on strengthening their cooperation in the Libyan file and facing the various challenges in the Mediterranean region at a time when Rome warned of a "terrorist threat close to its coasts."

The announcement of the new cooperation mechanism came at the end of the visit of by Italian Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Luigi Di Maio to Rabat and his meeting with Prime Minister Saadeddine Othmani and his Moroccan counterpart Nasser Bourita.

The new partnership aims to “establish a sustainable and in-depth dialogue at the level of all sectors of common interest, ensure coordination on international and regional issues related to Africa and the wider Mediterranean region, starting with the Libyan file, and strengthen the distinctive relationship between Morocco and the EU and give it more ambitious content," according to the joint statement.

The statement stressed the identical views of both sides regarding the situation in Libya, stressing that the option of a political settlement is the solution to the Libyan file.
