Italian Foreign Minister Luigi Di Maio called Friday for a major diplomatic move to stabilize Libya to address the immigration issue, Italian news agency AKI reported.

"This is an important first step, to make our country less bureaucratic in terms of repatriation procedures," de Maio told a press conference with Justice Minister Alfonso Bonavide to announce the new government decree on the return of immigrants.

The Italian Foreign Minister explained "it is important to stop illegal immigration boats," noting that "this happens through cooperation, as well as mechanisms for repatriation," as well as "through a major diplomatic work which aims to stabilize Libya."
