The head of Libya's Presidential Council, Fayez Al-Sarraj, said that the European leaders are standing behind the Government of National Accord (GNA), describing his European tour conducted a week ago as "fruitful."
"The GNA has close cooperation with the United States and the two sides are continuing their successful partnership in the fight against terrorism that has emerged in Sirte," Al-Sarraj said in an interview with Euronews.
"The GNA and its forces are defending the dream of all Libyans to establish a democratic civilian state and we will continue to defend this dream, the capital of Tripoli and the homes of the people, that the attacks of the forces of the General Command will be repelled."
Al-Sarraj added that "Haftar has gathered fighters in his ranks, who are part of criminal groups and other armed groups that have been outlawed." Stressing: "Haftar is trying to convince the world that he is an army."
Last week, Al-Sarraj held a European tour, during which he met a number of European leaders, including German Chancellor Angela Merkel, French President Emmanuel Macron and EU High Representative for Foreign Policy Federica Mogherini.
