Italian Premier Giuseppe Conte said he and Marshal Khalifa Haftar "spoke for a long time" on Thursday during a meeting in Conte's office at Chigi palace in Rome, in which Conte "expressed Italy's concern for the situation" in Libya.
"We want a ceasefire and we trust in the way of politics as a solution" to the crisis in the country, Conte said.
When asked by journalists if Haftar reassured Italy on an end to the conflict, Conte reiterated, "we spoke for a long time".
Haftar has launched an offensive on Prime Minister Fayez al-Sarraj's UN-backed government in Tripoli. The Conte-Haftar meeting on Thursday lasted for two hours.
