EU High Representative for Foreign and Security Policy, Federica Mogherini, called on Libya's political and military leaders to take full responsibility "at this difficult stage for the country."
"I think the political leadership and the military leadership in Libya need to take responsibility for a peaceful transition in the end," Mogherini said at a news conference after the EU foreign ministers' meeting in Luxembourg.
"We discussed the situation in Libya, even if it is not officially on the agenda today, given the recent developments," the EU official said. I follow the developments every minute, which certainly are not going in the right direction."
The representative noted that she had shared with member states the need to highlight a very unified European message, noting that there was a unified vision on inviting all parties and all regional actors to implement a full and immediate humanitarian truce at the request of the United Nations.
She pointed to the European Union's call for everyone to avoid further military action and return to the negotiating table under the auspices of the United Nations, and to ensure that the Libyan people get what they really want, which is peace and stability of the country.
