In its annual report on the human rights situation in Libya, the US State Department stressed the pressure journalists face while preforming their jobs, criticizing the lack of action by the House of Representatives and the Government of National Reconciliation to lift restrictions on freedom of expression.

In a report on freedom of opinion, expression and press in Libya, the State Department said that various armed groups, even those affiliated with official authorities, exercised considerable control over media content through censorship, while unidentified journalists and reporters were targeted.

Civil society has exercised self-censorship because Salafi-inspired armed groups, among others, have threatened and even killed in many instances, it said.
