The head of Libya's presidential council, Fayez Al- Sarraj, visited the Maltese capital Valletta on Wednesday and held discussions with Prime Minister Joseph Muscat.
It was agreed during the meetings on the need to address the issue of illegal immigration from a comprehensive perspective and through joint coordination. The two sides also agreed to work together to combat all smuggling operations, especially fuel smuggling, according to an official statement.
The Prime Minister of Malta stressed his country's keenness to coordinate and consult with the Government of National Accord on issues of mutual concern, especially the issue of illegal immigration, considering Libya and Malta as a transit and destination country for immigrants.
The two sides also discussed reactivating the air transport agreement and agreed to resume direct flights between Malta and Libya before the end of the first quarter of 2019.
Al-Sarraj also requested that the Maltese government to pay attention to the Libyan community in the country and provide the necessary support and facilities.
