The General Commander of the Libyan Armed Forces, Marshal Khalifa Haftar, said on Monday that he will participate in the international conference on Libya on 12th and 13th November in Palermo, Sicily.
A statement issued by the Italian government, which followed a meeting with Italian Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte in Rome today, said that Marshal Haftar confirmed his readiness to attend a "constructive conference which would change the direction of the country to achieve the aspirations of the Libyan people."
Haftar and Conte exchanged views on the conference, as the Italian prime minister reiterated the "facilitator" role Italy intends to play.
"This will be a Libyan conference, not one about Libya" the statement said, drawing on "two basic principles: full respect for the responsibility of the Libyans at the conference and ensuring the universality of the process."
The statement pointed out that the conference will feature the presence of all the main actors in Libya and "aims to support the security situation, economic development and support the political framework for an orderly political process based on the UN plan of action."
