The Italian news agency Aki reported Friday that the Italian consul to Benghazi, Guido De Sanctis, was appointed ambassador to Libya in Tripoli, replacing the current ambassador Giuseppe Perrone.

Sources say that the news in this regard is "baseless", noting that De Sanctis has been appointed as a deputy at the Italian Embassy to the Russian Federation and will take over the post in the coming weeks.

The Italian government has attributed Ambassador Perrone remaining in Rome to "security reasons."
