Italian Foreign Minister Enzo Moavero Milanesi said that "our main partners in Libya remain the legitimate United Nations backed government, led by Fayez Serraj, but General Haftar is an unavoidable party."
"There was an explanation of our positions with Haftar, who proved to be an open-minded person who pays attention to our country and understands the role he is playing," the Italian minister said in a radio interview.
Milanesi met with Haftar in Benghazi on Monday in order to strengthen relations with him.
The Italian Foreign Ministry said in a statement published by AFP that the two men "held a long and friendly meeting in the form of an appeal for close relations with Italy in an atmosphere of confidence."
The head of Libya's presidential council, Fayez Serraj, received a telephone call from Milanesi on Tuesday morning, during which he offered his condolences to the victims of the terrorist attack on the headquarters of the National Oil Corporation and the victims of the recent armed clashes in the southern suburbs of Tripoli.
The Italian official reiterated his country's support for the government of national accord and its stand alongside Libya and its full support for the efforts of Serraj to achieve security and stability in his country.
