Italian Foreign Minister Enzo Moavero Milanesi arrived in Benghazi on Monday to meet with army chief Marshal Khalifa Haftar, the Italian Foreign Ministry said.
"The meeting will focus on comprehensive political dialogue with all parties, under the auspices of UN envoy Ghassan Salamé, in order to preserve the unity and stability of Libya," the ministry tweeted on Monday.
Milanesi's visit is aimed at supporting political dialogue, the United Nations' national reconciliation process and supporting a comprehensive political process ahead of the elections by the end of the year, ANSA reported.
Milanesi is scheduled to discuss the objectives of the international conference, which is scheduled to be hosted by Italy in November, to discuss the Libyan crisis.
"Through the conference, Italy seeks to support stability and peace, to bring together internal and external parties interested in positive progress in Libya, and to enable Libyans to express their views," Milanesi said earlier.
It is noteworthy that the Italian Foreign Minister had previously stated the government of national accord, headed by Fayez Al-Serraj, is the officially recognized government for Libya.
