Tunisian Foreign Minister Khemaies Jhinaoui discussed with the UN envoy to Libya Ghassan Salamé developments in the political process in Libya and the ongoing preparations for the presidential and legislative elections.

The Tunisian foreign ministry said in a statement on Tuesday that the meeting, held Monday evening in Tunis, "falls within the framework of ongoing bilateral consultations on the Libyan file," noting that "it is an occasion to see the contacts made with various parties related to the file and to exchange views on ways to resolve the current crisis and overcome the deadlock in the path of political settlement."

Jhinaoui stressed "the importance of working to unify efforts to accelerate the coordination of the Libyan parties and create the conditions for the holding of legislative and presidential elections as soon as possible, so as to restore security and stability in the country and to spare the region the dangers of extremism and terrorism."

For his part, the UN envoy stressed the need for concerted efforts by all regional and international players to push for a Libyan-Libyan compromise under the auspices of the UN, expressing his gratitude for the support that Tunisia has been providing at various levels to the efforts of the United Nations aimed at bringing peace to Libya.
