Italian Deputy Prime Minister and Interior Minister Matteo Salvini said that "the process of stability in Libya should not pass through rapid and ill-considered leaps, such as those hoped for by the French purely on the basis of national interests."

"Jumps forward are futile and will not benefit anyone," Salvini told a news conference on Wednesday evening after returning from a brief visit to Cairo." There is a need to be careful, attentive and respectful of the wishes of Libyans."

The Egyptian presidency said in a statement following a meeting between Salvini and el-Sisi in Cairo that "there is a consensus between the two sides on the path of resolving the Libyan crisis, which is based on rebuilding state institutions, foremost of which is the national army, parliament and government."
