The Commander of the Libyan Armed Forces, Marshal Khalifa Haftar, announced on Thursday evening the liberation of the city of Derna from the grip of terrorist groups in a televised speech.
In the speech addressed to the Libyan people, Haftar said: "After a bitter struggle and great sacrifices, today, is a time of victory for us and the date of defeat for the terrorists and their supporters." adding, "after a bitter struggle and great sacrifices."
"To the great and honorable Libyan people," he said, "we responded to your call for dignity."
"To those who supported the army and were looking forward to the hour of salvation, we salute you on this happy occasion." Adding "The people of Derna welcomed us with happiness and pleasure, the feelings that flooded their hearts with pride at the sight to the Libyan national army."
The General Command Information Office announced earlier today that "the armed forces entered the last bastion of the terrorist groups in Derna." Adding that violent clashes ensued but ultimately leading the army to be in complete control of the city.
