The Commander-in-Chief of the Libyan National Army, Khalifa Hafter, announced the launch of the second phase of the liberation of the city of Derna from terrorist groups, praising the role of the Libyan National Army forces in it’s fight against terrorism.
This came in a speech recorded by the Information Office of the General Command of the Armed Forces of Libya through its Youtube Channel.
In the recording, Hafter announced that an Operations Room will be established after the army gains controls of the city and liberates it from extremists groups.
On Monday, three soldiers were killed and at least 11 were wounded from the Libyan National Army forces as a result of clashes in the eastern and western parts of Derna.
The commander of the Special Forces, Major General Wanis Boukhamada, said Monday, that Derna "is just around the corner" of liberation. The Libyan National Army forces are advancing from all sides and axes in the city."
In a statement to the Alwasat, Boukhadema said that the Shura Council of the Mujahideen of Derna and was “abhorrent in front of the strikes of the Libyan army,” which advanced into the city this morning from the eastern neighborhoods, “in an organized military operation.”
He added that the Libyan army units took control of several other strategic sites in the western entrance of the city.
"The army has tightened its grip on terrorist organizations," he said. "The fighting is taking place near the port and the hotels from the eastern axis." He called on residents not to leave their homes and to stay away from windows, doors and roofs to preserve their lives.
The military engineering class of the Special Forces is conducting extensive sweeps of the sites under control, he said, adding that they dismantled a number of landmines and improvised explosive devices at the western entrance to the city.
