UN mission welcomes meeting by Libyan governments to unify 2021 national budget

The United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) on Tuesday welcomed the meeting held between finance minister Faraj Boumatari and his counterpart in the Interim Government Emraja Ghaith in Brega, with the aim of unifying the national budget for 2021.

"This Libyan-Libyan cooperation is an encouraging and absolutely necessary step that should be accompanied by real efforts on the political track to form a unified government that is better placed to effectively implement the unified budget," the UN mission said in a statement.

Adding: "Unifying the national budget is critical to establishing more sustainable and equitable economic arrangements that meet the needs of all Libyans, including improving basic services, and meeting the urgent need to repair the country's deteriorating infrastructure, especially the electricity grid."

The mission also stressed the importance that "the formulation of the budget in a transparent manner with the provision of the necessary technical support from international financial institutions."
