A government official said on Thursday that the Government of the National Accord suspended the operations of 40 foreign companies, including the French oil company Total.

The Ministry of Economy said the licenses of companies expired, according to a decree published on the Internet and confirmed by a health ministry official.

Total, which has extensive oil and gas interests in Libya, is the only company on the list known to have significant dealings in the country. Other companies on the list include Thales, Siemens, and Alcatel-Lucent, a communications equipment company currently owned by Nokia.
